Martin John Lee. April 24-June 4 2021.

RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW is simultaneously the latent form and realisation of an ever-possible exhibition. Art theorist, Jan Verwoert, argues there’s a constant demand for us all to perform, and potential is only considered of value if it can be actualised immediately. He advocates interrupting this pressure to perform or say I can, by saying I can’t in a way suggestive of I can. This work plays on the presence of the Wide Open Road Art (WORA) windows which, like any gallery space, provoke the expectation of an exhibition.
Martin John Lee is a multidisciplinary artist based in Castlemaine, Victoria. His practice ranges from installation assemblages to video works, and varying combinations in between. Martin’s work explores the contemporary dynamics and intersections of masculinity, cultural norms and societal expectations.
Martin’s current projects include PLAY ON, a video work created in conjunction with the Castlemaine Football Netball Club, and with the support of Regional Arts Victoria, which explores the cancellation of contact sport in the time of COVID-19. In 2019 Martin completed a Masters of Contemporary Art at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) and was awarded the Majlis Encouragement Award at the VCA Graduate Show. He also holds a Graduate Certificate in Visual Art from VCA, 2017, and a Bachelor of Art (Ceramic Design) from Monash University, 1992.
